Are NGOs and non-governmental organizations the same thing?
Both terms refer to entities of the so-called third sector, which, among other things:
- are non-profit,
- are not part of the state structure and in this sense are “non-governmental.”
In Polish, there are several names functioning to describe third sector organizations. They are referred to as:
- non-governmental organizations (organizacje pozarządowe)
- social organizations (organizacje społeczne),
- NGO,
- non-profit organizations,
- voluntary organizations (organizacje ochotnicze),
- civic organizations (organizacje obywatelskie),
- independent organizations (organizacje niezależne),
- public interest organizations (organizacje użyteczności publicznej).
The names “NGO” or “non-governmental organization” (as well as the others mentioned above) are usually used in Poland for foundations or associations.
