Can NGOs hire employees?

Non-governmental organizations operate not-for-profit - but this does not mean that people working in them cannot be paid for their work. Organizations can hire employees just like public institutions or private companies.

Thus, not all people working for organizations are volunteers - there are people working for organizations who are employed on a full-time basis, under a commission agreement or on a contract.

According to a study by the Klon/Jawor Association, "Condition of the NGO sector in Poland 2015", 35% of organizations in Poland have a team of permanent, regular employees: 20% of organizations employ at least one person on the basis of an employment contract. In the remaining 15% of organizations, no one is employed under an employment contract, but the organization has permanent, regular employees employed on the basis of recurring commission agreements, contracts for specific work or as self-employed subcontractors. 20% of the organizations have no regular staff, but occasionally contract out paid work under civil law contracts.

45% of NGOs do not pay the people active in the organization for their work in any way, these organizations rely 100% on volunteer work.
